P8: The Leading-edge "Keitai" Applications: Changing Life Styles
Co-Chairs: Naohisa Ohta, Professor, Keio University, Japan and Hiroyuki
Morikawa, Associate Professor, University of Tokyo, Japan
Abstract: This panel will focus on the new application trends of mobile phones. It is well-known that more than 90% of mobile phones ("Keitai" in Japanese) used in Japan are equipped with digital camera and Internet access functions. The newest models include such leading-edge technologies as a video camera , a digital terrestrial broadcast TV receiver, removable digital memory, and a smart card for making small payments. While phones so-equipped are still a small fraction of the total installed base, they are enabling new applications based on "Keitai and Digital CE" convergence and can potentially lead to changes in people's life style, not only in Japan but also in the rest of the world.
The speakers at this panel will discuss the above mentioned trends of mobile phones from the view points of technologies, applications and services, as well as life styles. We have invited several distinguished speakers from Japan which is one of most advanced countries in terms of mobile phone applications. The views of these Japanese experts will provide a useful sketch of the future in Japan, and a valuable reference for other regions.
