P3: Convergence of Services and its Impact on Wireless Operator Business Models and Infrastructure

Chair: PK Prasanna, Practice Lead, InCode, USA

Abstract: There has been much talk about convergence in the past and there is a renewed interest in this topic once again Unlike past visions of convergence, which were predominantly transport-based, a new services-based view of convergence has emerged. Such a services-based view offers radically new business opportunities and creates new technical challenges. In the final analysis, a cross-section of subscribers must be attracted to a new generation of cross-network services - a different way of thinking, indeed. This panel discusses a number of the infrastructure elements that will be impacted, and the approaches taken by service providers and infrastructure vendors in working across a heterogeneous set of networks. In particular, the panel will address three aspects of convergence from a business and technical perspective: seamless service mobility, premium messaging and mCommerce services, and Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs).
